Pair brass bookends. The two bookends are a heavy cast metal with a brass finish. I am not sure if they are brass plated or brass over the cast metal. The back of the bookends has a bronze finish. The bookends depict either a monk or bishop reading in the library. Each bookend has a impressed mark 21B.
I have tried to research the mark and bookends similar with that mark were made by Philadelphia Manufacturing Company or PM Craftsman. There is however no tag to note that company.
The company made slush metal castings of bookends and other decorative objects. Slush metal casting is when the hot metal is poured into the mold. Once it has cooled it forms a shell and the remaining liquid is removed leaving the desired mold or shell with the inside hollow.
Though the bookends are hollow, they are very heavy and sturdy. They are in very nice condition but do appear to be lacquered. There is a little tarnish. Please see photos.
There are a couple of little dings on a couple of corners, but it does not affect the functionality or charm of the bookends. Priced accordingly.
